Rhonda Wasserman and a Third Circuit Review of Cases
Professor Rhonda Wasserman spoke at the Third Circuit Review of Cases, sponsored by the Federal Courts Section of the Allegheny County Bar Association on Thursday, May 21, 2009. She presented three recent Third Circuit decisions that resolved issues of first impression relating to federal class action practice; one decision that addressed federal pleading standards after the United States Supreme Court’s decision in Bell Atlantic v. Twombly; and the Supreme Court’s very recent game-changing decision in Ashcraft v. Iqbal. Other speakers included Vic Walczak, Legal Director of the ACLU of Pennsylvania; Lisa Freeland, Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Pennsylvania; Stephen Kaufman, Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania; and Cynthia Eddy, a criminal defense attorney. Six Third Circuit Judges commented on the presentations: Judges D. Michael Fisher; Julio M. Fuentes; Thomas M. Hardiman; Kent A. Jordan; D. Brooks Smith; and Joseph F. Weis, Jr. The moderator of the program was Robert Byer.
