Commencement 2013 Ceremony

Ceremony

Venue Information (Soldiers & Sailors Hall) >

Graduates should arrive at Soldiers and Sailors no later than 2:15 p.m. At 2:30 p.m. take your place in line alphabetically as directed by the Registrar. Last names ending in A-L, MSL and LL.M. students report to the left of the main doors and last names ending M-Z report to the right.

After you have taken your place in line you will receive a Commencement Program and a name card. You must retain the name card for presentation to Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Tony Infanti, or Associate Dean for Students, Kevin Deasy, who will announce your name as you walk across the stage. If your name is difficult to pronounce, PRINT the phonetic spelling below your name on the card in large letters. The line-up area is small and your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

MSL students will lead the procession and should take their place at the front of the A-L line (left hallway) followed by the LL.M. and JD students. Staff will assist you as you line up and the Registrar will lead the procession and seat you in the auditorium. You will enter the stage from the left and proceed as follows:

  • MSL students hand their Name Announcement Card to Prof. Alan Meisel. As your name is read, proceed across the stage to Dean Carter. The Dean will congratulate you and present you with your scroll. After receiving your scroll, continue to move across the front of the stage to the steps along the wall and return to your original seat in the auditorium.
  • LL.M. Students will enter the stage area from the left. Before you go up the steps the Registrar will hand you your academic hood. Hand your hood to the professor who is standing at the top of the steps.  After your hood is secure, please hand your Name Card to next professor in line on the stage. As your name is read, proceed across the stage to Dean Carter. The Dean will congratulate you and present you with your scroll. After receiving your scroll, continue to move across the front of the stage to the steps along the wall and return to your original seat in the auditorium. Be seated as soon as you return so as not to obstruct the view of those seated behind you.
  • JD Students will enter the stage area from the left. Before you go up the steps the Registrar will hand you your academic hood. At the top of the steps hand your hood to the professors who will hood you. The graduating class will elect these professors on or by April 19. After your hood is secure, please hand your Name Card to one of the Associate Deans. As your name is read, proceed across the stage to Dean Carter. The Dean will congratulate you and present you with your scroll. After receiving your scroll, continue to move across the front of the stage to the steps along the wall and return to your original seat in the auditorium. Be seated as soon as your return so as not to obstruct the view of those seated behind you.

Hooding Note: When receiving your hood, please turn and face the audience so that your hood can be placed over your head. If you are tall, it would be helpful for you to remove your cap.

After all LL.M. and JD students are hooded, the Dean will ask the Class of 2013 to stand and move mortar board tassels from the right to the left and remain standing for applause.

Ceremony Photography

A photographer will be at the ceremony to take two (2) photographs of you at your special moment of recognition. You will receive your proofs in the mail a few weeks after the ceremony, at which time you may order prints if you choose. If you have additional questions, you may contact Chappell Studios directly at www. chappell.com or by calling 1-800-247-3435. Since professional photographs will be available, family members and guests are encouraged to remain in their seats.

Recessional

The platform party will exit using the right stairs (facing the stage) and will exit. The faculty will follow the platform party. Then beginning with row “B”, graduates will stand one row at a time and follow. To avoid congestion, move away from the exits as quickly as possible. The audience will remain seated until after the Recessional.
