Cap & Gown

Cap & Gown Rental Information

All graduates are required to wear the authorized University of Pittsburgh School of Law academic regalia provided for you by the cap and gown vendor.

Rental orders will be taken Monday, March 11th through Friday, April 5th at the University Book Center.  The temporary address is 3601 Forbes Ave. next to Hello Bistro.  The orders are being taken in the apparel section of the Book Center, which is directly to the right as you enter. You can also place your order by phone by calling 800-648-1451.  You will need to tell them your height, weight, and submit a form of payment.

The cost for the JD and LL.M regalia is $86.67.

The cost for the MSL regalia is $63.13.

The Book Center will accept cash, check, payable to the University of Pittsburgh, or Panther Funds. They also accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express credit cards. Please remember that the rental fee is non-refundable.

Late fees will be applied to each order after the scheduled order April 8th.  Each week that you delay in placing your order a $10 late fee is applied. This means that if you wait until April 27 to place your order the cost of the JD rental will total $116.67 (includes $10 per week late fee).

The Law School cannot accept any regalia orders.

Cap & Gown Pickup

You may pick up your cap and gown in the Courtroom between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7 and Wednesday, May 8. If you are unable to pick up your regalia on one of these dates, please arrange for someone to do it for you. All regalia must be picked up by 3:00 p.m. on May 8.

Graduates cannot wear a hood from any institution where you received your Master’s or PhD. It is the tradition of the University of Pittsburgh as well as proper etiquette for graduates to wear only the approved Pitt Law JD hood.

Cap & Gown Return

Graduates are to return their regalia in the hallway adjacent to the auditorium behind the stage area before leaving for the Reception at the Cathedral of Learning.

The mortar board and purple tassel are yours to keep.

Shoes and Grooming

There is no formal dress code for Commencement. Most graduates wear business-like attire under their robes. It is recommended that low heels be worn. Regalia should be wrinkle free.
