Course Description

This course will study various perspectives on theory and doctrine relating to gender in a number of different substantive areas of law. The course objectives are to: (1) integrate theory and practice in the study of law; (2) better understand how law both reflects and shapes understandings of gender in society; and (3) develop students’ writing and analytical skills in addressing practical legal problems in areas relevant to gender and the law. The course is organized around several theoretical models of gender and feminism rather than by traditional subject matter categories. Within this framework, we will examine a number of different subject matter areas of law, including employment, education, athletics, work/family conflicts, the legal profession, sexual harassment, domestic violence, and the regulation of gender identity.
